SSC members regulary sponsor, coordinate or participate in a wide variety of activities and events. General descriptions follow here. (Reference SSC Calendar for specific dates and details.)

Bike trips usually occur during the months of May - October. Generally the bike trips are on Friday - Sunday but the day of the week is flexible based on the availability of the participants. Denver and surrounding communities have an excellent trail system. Members are encouraged to recommend their favorite biking trails.

All biking is on paved trails or wide dirt trails such as the Highline Canal. There is no all-terrain biking and no street biking and only easy riding trails with no severe altitude changes are selected. The bike trips start from a location and return to that same location. The length of the trips averages around 15 miles round-trip. Lunch at a nearby restaurant is usually part of the ride at the half-way point or after the ride is completed.

The SSC Bookclub meets monthly on the last Monday of the month. Books selected are readily available at the library, in the 300-400 page range and of interest to a majority of our readers. This results in a mix of best sellers, classics, local authors, fiction and non-fiction selections. Meetings are held at our member's homes and everyone in SSC is invited to attend as often as they wish.

Bowling events are usually held in the colder months of the year between October and April. Most often bowling will occur on a Sunday afternoon or evening and will consist of bowling two or three games which is up to the individual. This is a non-competitive, friendly atmosphere with a wide range of abilities and is usually attended by a good mix of men and women. All abilities are invited.

An effort is made to find bowling centers that are reasonably priced. Our recent rates have ranged from $1 - $3 per game and for rental shoes. Often dinners at sit-down restaurants located near the bowling center will either precede or follow the bowling. Dinner is optional.

Bridge games are held the second Monday of each month at Heather Ridge Country Club. The players meet in the lounge at 6:00 p.m. for a quick overview by the coordinator. After grabbing a quick bite and a beverage, the game begins promptly at 7:00 p.m. in the dining room, and goes to around 9:30 p.m. There are 12 permanent players and 10 alternate players.

Dining together usually precedes or follows an event such as golf, bowling, and movies. They are held at a nearby restaurant, or are hosted in a member’s home. Additionally, special dinners are planned with the Annual Meeting, Christmas Holiday Party, the “Spring Fling” dinner, the special $52.80 Dinner-for-Two at a very nice local restaurant, and the “Fall Fling” dinner in October. Dinners are very popular with the group as it gives members a chance to get together to catch up, enjoy each other’s company, and get to know new members.

The primary purpose of the Investment Club is to learn about the stock market. At the monthly meeting, the existing stock portfolio is evaluated and new stocks are presented. Members are assigned one or two stocks to watch. A report on the performance of each stock is presented at the meeting. Each member owns a share of the total portfolio and makes a monthly contribution which ranges from $20.00 - $50.00. Outside speakers are invited on an occasional basis. New members are welcome.

Movie Nights are scheduled monthly during the winter months. The movie selected usually has received a three star (or higher) rating and is one which will appeal to a wide variety of tastes. Every attempt is made to see the movie shortly after its release. Dinner and lively conversation always follow the movie.

SSC is involved in many activities throughout the year and most are mentioned under the other headings. Some additional events that may not fit in other categories include the annual picnic, miniature golf and go-carts, trips to Blackhawk for casino gambling and Community Outreach. The annual picnic is usually held in May or June and includes a cookout and outdoor games such as croquet, horseshoes, etc. Miniature golf and go-carts has been a good summer activity. Trips to Blackhawk occur a few times a year and usually include dinner and gambling. The club's Community Outreach program, our charity efforts throughout the year, is more fully described at Community Outreach.

Parties are usually held in a member’s home. Many parties are held in conjunction with a special holiday such as the 4th of July, Labor Day weekend, and during the Christmas holiday. Parties are also held in a member’s home following an event such as golf. These are well attended as members do enjoy getting together to eat and drink.

Snowshoeing events usually begin in December and occur into April depending on the quality and quantity of the snow. They most often occur on Fridays but this is flexible based on the availability of the participants. One or two trips are planned per month and most often the trails are near the towns of Silverthorne, Keystone, Frisco or Breckenridge in Summit County. Members are encouraged to recommend their favorite snowshoeing trails.

Carpooling is used whenever possible. This is light and easy snowshoeing. Beginners are welcome and usually there are extra pairs of snowshoes available for those who want to try it. There are several SSC special events throughout the year. These include our Annual Meeting, the Christmas Holiday Party, the “Spring Fling” dinner, the Golf Kick-off dinner, and the “Fall Fling” dinner. These are celebrated to usher in the advent of activities for that particular season. These are always well attended. SSC strives to provide activities that all of its members can enjoy. As part of that goal, a wide variety of spectator sports is available throughout the year. Activities we have enjoyed in the past include Rockies games, Nuggets games, Mammoth games, Roller Derby, and Horse Racing. Tickets are obtained in advance and an effort is made to find tickets at the best price available. We sit as a group at the game. Dinner or lunch is sometimes included as part of the event. Member suggestions for possible events are always welcome.

For more information, contact Bob Reece at 303-229-2393 or btrrockies@aol.com.

From spring to late fall, weather permitting, we play tennis one night per week at outdoor public tennis courts in central Denver. Winning is great, but we are here to have fun. All levels are welcome. A trip to a local eatery often follows tennis so we can brag and laugh about our antics on the courts. $3.00 per week per person covers the cost of new tennis balls and court rentals.

Arts and Culture: SSC members have the opportunity to participate in many of the Denver area’s artistic and cultural events.

Denver’s small venue theaters are well supported by the community and we have a wide variety of local theaters. We regularly have theatre events, usually preceded by dinner at a nearby restaurant. Tickets to these theaters are inexpensive, and the quality is excellent.

We have, as a group, enjoyed a wide variety of music, from classical to country western. The summer is a great time for concerts in the Colorado outdoors, such as Hudson Gardens or the CSO in City Park on a Sunday afternoon. In the colder months we’ve been to places like Lannie’s for burlesque and the Shadow Theater for Sweet Corner Symphony. At the Boulder Dinner Theater we’ve seen Cats, Jesus Christ Superstar, Chicago, Singing in the Rain, and other musicals they do so well.

Would you enjoy going to the Denver Art Museum, the Friday Art Walk on Santa Fe, visit the RiNo art district some evening or do something different like going to the Wits End for an evening of comedy? Maybe there is something that you would like to do and have others share with you. We strongly support our members in organizing events in their areas of interest.

We have a great group of people that enjoy doing a wide variety of things, and we invite you to join us.

If the preceding collection of activities and events are insufficient to satisfy members desires for camaraderie and entertainment, members are encouraged to build their own. Indeed, some of SSC’s most enjoyed functions arose from a single person’s initiative.
